American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Honorary Fellowship (Established 1913)

We ask for your help in identifying candidates for Honorary Fellowship. Criteria from the Bylaws state:

“The Regents may elect as Honorary Fellows, individuals who: (a) possess an international reputation in the field of surgery or medicine and who have spent the majority of their careers practicing outside of the United States, or (b) have rendered distinguished humanitarian services, especially in the field of medical science. Honorary Fellows shall not be required to pay fees or dues but shall enjoy all of the privileges of the Fellows except that they shall not have the right to vote or to hold office. Optimally, Honorary Fellowship should be conferred in person. However, under exceptional or extraordinary circumstances, other methods for presentation may be considered and approved by the Honors Committee.”

There are currently seventeen (17) candidates under active consideration for Honorary Fellowship, and the following nine (9) individuals will be conferred with Honorary Fellowship at the 2020 Convocation Ceremony during the annual Clinical Congress in Chicago, Illinois:

  • Prof. S. Raja Sabapathy, Coimbatore, India  (Hand/Reconstructive Plastic Surgery)

The Honors Committee has a process to perform due diligence on all nominees by assigning regional responsibilities to its members. This process includes peer review in the geographic locations. It is the job of the Honors Committee to identify the best candidates from among those who are nominated from various constituencies and to recommend Honorary Fellows-Elect to the Board of Regents for confirmation. To this end, the Honors Committee welcomes and encourages nominations from all surgical specialties and geographic locations. NOTE:  Due to the number of Honorary Fellows-Elect (HFEs) being inducted into Honorary Fellowship this year and the time constraints associated with the Convocation ceremony, there will be no formal presenters announcing and presenting this year’s HFEs. Instead, the President will announce and recognize each HFE and a detailed biography for each will be featured in the official Convocation program book.
