The mission of the Women in Surgery Committee (WiSC) is to enable women surgeons of all ages and practice types to develop their individual potential as professionals; promote an environment that fosters inclusion, respect, and success; develop, encourage and advance women surgeons as leaders; and provide a forum and networking opportunities to enhance women’s surgical career satisfaction.

The committee meets four times each year—twice in person at the Leadership & Advocacy Summit and at the Clinical Congress, and then via conference calls. The subcommittees meet regularly via conference call. Listen to a podcast about WiSC

Committee Activities

The WiSC includes representatives from a variety of specialties, medical students, and representatives from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Governors, Resident and Associate Society, Young Fellows Association, the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS), and the Women in Neurosurgery. The committee is comprised of six subcommittees.

Recent ACS Statements developed by the committee include the Statement on the Importance of Parental Leave, the Statement on Gender Salary Equity, and the Statement on Intimate Partner Violence.

ACS Women in Surgery Committee—Leadership Seminar

Learning to grow and enhance one’s skills as a leader is important throughout every stage of your career as a surgeon and in your professional and personal endeavors. On Saturday, April 24, 2021, the Women in Surgery Committee hosted a half day seminar focused on leadership. The seminar featured Mary Hawn, MD, FACS presenting “Unique Career Challenges Facing Women Surgeons; Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, MPA, FAAP, FACP, FAHA, FTOS, presenting “Diversity and Inclusion: The Way Forward;” and, Beth Sutton, MD, FACS, presenting “Leadership in the American College of Surgeons.
