American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Welcome to the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators

Following unanimous approval by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Regents of the proposal of the ACS Division of Education to establish an ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators™, a Steering Committee was appointed to create the model for this unique Academy and developed the standards and criteria for admission to the Academy.

The Mission of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators is to play a leadership role in advancing the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties promoting the highest achievements in the lifetimes of surgeons.

The Goals of the Academy include defining megatrends in surgical education and training; steering advances in the field; fostering innovation and collaboration; supporting faculty development and recognition; and underscoring the critical importance of surgical education and training in the changing milieu of health care.

Academy members are selected through a rigorous peer-review process and induction into the Academy will be a very high honor. Members of the Academy will be expected to engage actively in activities to address the aforementioned goals. Academy membership will be open to Master Surgeon Educators from across the surgical specialties.

The Founding Members of the Academy were inducted in 2018 along with Associate Members of this inaugural cohort. In 2019, the new category of Affiliate Members was introduced and the second cohort of Members and Associate Members, was inducted. In 2020 and 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the induction ceremonies were conducted virtually. Currently, membership of the Academy includes 302 Members, Associate Members, and Affiliate Members. Each year the membership of the Academy is recognized during the Annual Convocation of the American College of Surgeons and the list of Members, Associate Members, and Affiliate Members is included in the program books of the Convocation Ceremony and the program of the Annual Clinical Congress.

The Academy is more than an honorific group. The preeminent members of the Academy have been engaged in a variety of different activities and have made enormous contributions. In 2019, the Academy hosted a special Symposium on Emerging Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in Surgical Care and Education. In 2020 and 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a Special Committee to Address Challenges and Opportunities Relating to Surgery Residency Training During the COVID-19 Pandemic was appointed. This Committee has pursued very significant opportunities that are not only important during the pandemic but will result in transformation changes in surgical residency training even after the pandemic. Monthly newsletters from the Academy are sent to the entire membership of the Academy. Also, a new educational resources webpage and a new listserv have been established to enhance communication among the Academy members.

In October 2020, the ACS Board of Regents unanimously approved the use of a Membership Mark of the Academy, Member, Academy of Master Surgeon Educators (MAMSE).
