American College of Surgeons and stakeholders address how to train surgeons in the future with advanced simulation technologies

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is kicking off a critical discussion on how to best train surgeons in the future using simulation science as a fundamental building block. On Monday, June 12, ACS will host Training the Next Generation of Surgeons: Making it Stick, Making it Real, Making it Together, a forum that will mobilize stakeholders to identify best practices and key considerations in simulation training, and build the case for more standardized implementation of simulation training and assessment in early surgical education and beyond. The ultimate goal of the forum, which will be held in Seattle at the University of Washington's (UW) WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare, is to begin formulating principles and standards that will maximize simulation training’s value and improve surgeon performance.


The forum will include opening remarks from ACS and UW leadership, and panel sessions on key topics including model simulation programs, advances in simulation technologies and tools, and considerations for applying simulation training and assessment broadly. Then, there will be a keynote address by K. Anders Ericsson, PhD, centered on the cognitive learning process behind skills acquisition and expert performance. Tours of the WISH simulation lab and a workshop session on team training will round out the program.

The American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes (ACS-AEIs) play a vital role in educating and training practicing surgeons, surgery residents, medical students, and members of the surgical team using simulation-based education. The Program for Accreditation of ACS-AEIs was developed, pilot tested, and then launched by the ACS Division of Education in 2005.
