November 16, 2020 - Beginning this month, Excelsior leadership will introduce monthly webinars for Excelsior membership. These recurring webinars will occur on the third Friday of every month, from 1430-1600 CT. They will feature leadership updates, committee reports, question-and-answer sessions, and speakers who will tackle real-world topics of importance and relevance to Excelsior membership. A tentative schedule for the 2020-2021 webinars is available.

October 15, 2020The Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons elected Annesley (AJ) W. Copeland, MD, FACS, as a member of the Board of Regents. Dr. Copeland is a general surgeon and associate professor of surgery and surgery core clerkship director, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, as well as attending surgeon, Walter Reed Army Medical Center/Walter Reed Military Medical Center.

Matt Martin, MD FACS, Trauma Surgeon at Scripps Mercy Hospital; and Captain Gordon Wisbach, MD MBA FACS, Excelsior Surgical Society President.

October 8, 2020Day one of the Excelsior Surgical Society Symposium. Features the “State of the Excelsior Surgical Society” address by Society President Captain Gordon Wisbach, MD MBA FACS, as well as presentations by the Service Consultants.

October 4, 2020—Distinguished Member Captain (Ret.) Frank Butler, MD, received the Distinguished Lifetime Military Contribution Award.

October 3, 2020—Travis M. Polk, MD, FACS, Los Angeles, CA, received the ATLS Styner Award during the ACS COT virtual business and award session, for his outstanding commitment to strengthening the foundation of ATLS trauma education principles and expanding the reach of the program to improve patient outcomes.

September 18, 2020—This year’s SOMSA virtual conference has launched.  Please support the only organization and conference dedicated specifically to special operations medicine and the special operations medic.  Access the conference here.

September 16, 2020—An article about military-civilian surgical partnerships, “Combating the Peacetime Effect in Military Medicine”,  was published in in JAMA Surgery,authored by ESS Secretary Colonel Jeremy W. Cannon, Membership Committee Co-chair Colonel Kirby R. Gross, and ESS Vice President (President-Elect) Colonel Todd E. Rasmussen.

July 21, 2020 – Major Jason Bingham, Co-Chair of the Excelsior Surgical Society Research Committee, coauthored an article “Filling the gap: Using 3-D printing to overcome critical equipment shortages during the COVID-19 crisis” in the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons.

July 20, 2020 –  The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery just released a podcast featuring two Excelsior Surgical Society Executive Officers, Colonel Todd Rasmussen and Colonel Jeremy Cannon, regarding the new Journal of Trauma Military Supplement. Check it out!
