American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Message from the Chair

Dear members of RAS-ACS,

Naveen SangjiAs many of you have undoubtedly heard, there were a number of issues with the American Board of Surgery (ABS) Qualifying Exam (QE) this year that ultimately led to the cancellation of the second day of the scheduled exam.

These events created a lot of stress and uncertainty for our members. We in RAS-ACS leadership have been advocating for you tirelessly. We collected close to 200 questions from our members that were shared on your behalf with the ABS leadership, helped host a recent town hall with ABS director Dr. Jo Buyske, and requested RAS-ACS representation on an ABS workgroup convened to address the QE. This request was accepted.

As we announced recently, the ABS is convening a 12-member committee to address the issues with the QE. The board invited three RAS-ACS members (and an alternate) to join this committee. We received more than 40 applications for these positions and are pleased to announce your representatives to the workgroup:

  • Kaitlyn Ritter, MD, University of Denver
  • Camilee Stewart, MD, City of Hope
  • Christine Castater, MD, Emory
  • Alternate: Hari Keshava, MD, UC Irvine

The RAS-ACS representatives to this workgroup will report directly to the Executive Committee. In turn, we will share updates with you in as close to “live” time as possible.

Thank you for your engagement. Please continue to share questions and concerns with us at
