American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Message from the Chair

Raphael Sun, MDDear Fellow RAS-ACS Members,

We have an exciting year ahead of us. On behalf of the Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons (RAS-ACS) Executive Committee, we would like to share with you the core values that we have decided to focus on this year. Every one of you is a leader in some way, shape, or form no matter if you have a title or not and no matter what size of the community you work in.

Here are six core values that we as a leadership felt were important for us as an executive committee.

  1. Leading by example. I strongly believe that you can't ask someone to do something that you're not willing to do yourself. Whether you are a vocal leader or not, people observe and follow your example. This is important no matter what type of leadership style you choose.
  2. Eliminate the 4 Cs. Criticize, Complain, Compete, and Compare. By eliminating the 4 Cs you will find more happiness as a leader.
  3. Enthusiasm. Someone once told me that the one thing more contagious than enthusiasm is the lack of it. It is so easy to deflate the entire room with negativity. When you are enthusiastic, the people will around you will also become enthusiastic.
  4. Gratitude. I find that my day goes much better if I'm grateful for the things that I have rather than focusing on the things that I lack. It is so easy to fall into the trap of wanting more or not being satisfied. I feel like an attitude of gratitude will really help us come together and maintain a positive attitude.
  5. Humility. I myself do not know claim to know everything and I am not perfect. I am willing to listen, improve, and learn from others and use their strengths to better my weaknesses. Please stay humble as you climb up through the ranks as a leader.
  6. Teamwork. As surgeons, we are always part of a team no matter how great or small that is. There is a real power and strength in numbers, and we can accomplish greater things when we simply work together and collaborate.

The RAS-ACS will continue to grow exponentially. I have been an active member for nearly a decade and have seen this organization grow in front of my eyes. If you would like to be involved, we will find you a role and a place. You can always email us at We look forward to a wonderful year ahead and please feel free to reach out if you need anything
